In 2023, distracted drivers was a factor in 3,564 road collisions in the UK, causing 95 fatalities. Driver distraction remains a major road safety problem, contributing to accidents both inside and outside the vehicle through actions like phone use, eating, talking to passengers, or even daydreaming. Recent data shows high rates of distraction, with one in ten drivers admitting to illegal phone use, and many more engaging in other distracting activities behind the wheel, such as applying makeup or styling hair. Key Statistics (2023)
- Total Collisions:3,564 collisions were linked to distracted driving.
- Fatalities:95 collisions resulted in fatalities.
- Seriously Injured:940 people were killed or seriously injured when the driver was distracted by something inside the vehicle.
- External Distractions:280 people were killed or seriously injured when a driver was distracted by something outside the vehicle.
Common Distractions
- Inside the Vehicle:
- Mobile phone use: Including texting, calling, and checking notifications.
- Grooming: Applying makeup, styling hair, or shaving.
- Eating and drinking.
- Interactions with passengers: Arguments, or dealing with children.
- Using navigation systems or other in-vehicle controls.
- Smoking or vaping.
- Outside the Vehicle:
- Distracting objects on the road or roadside.
- Seeing something interesting or unusual.
